Matthew Knies is currently playing in the Frozen Four with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. He is expected to sign his NHL entry contract as soon as his season ends.
The Leafs planned for his arrival. They intentionally left a contract spot with the required cap space to sign him after his NCAA season. They calculated everything but forgot to take one thing into account.Friedman Reveals an Issue Between the Leafs and Knies Contract

The Leafs simply don't have cap space for maximum bonuses.
However, Knies would benefit greatly from signing this year. If he signs his contract this season, he'll have a year off his entry contract, which would work to his advantage. He would be closer to securing a substantial contract with more significant earnings.
Knies could join the Leafs for their final three games. Both sides will need to expedite negotiations if he wants to turn pro this year.
