With the Maple Leafs dealing with a David Kampf injury, they will call on one forward to solve their issues which could spell success or complete disaster.
Although the team walked away with a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers, it wasn't all positive. Defenseman Jake McCabe left the game in the waning minutes, and David Kampf left earlier in the game and did not return; a concerning sign for the team going forward.
So with Kampf out for the time being, Craig Berube is going to need to call upon some reinforcements, and unfortunately for Toronto, they will be forced to call upon Nick Robertson to help fill the void; which could make or break Toronto.
Nick Robertson Only Option For Toronto
While there are certainly other options from the Marlies who could be called up, it's a tough fix given Toronto can't really move people back and forth right now, and without any other real forward options; it's up to Robertson to shoulder the load.
It will be interesting to see how Robertson adapts to a purely defensive role, and while it's feasible to see Berube move someone like Calle Jarnkrok or Scott Laughton down in favor of Robertson, but they are finding chemistry and need to keep things going.
More than likely he'll line up beside Pontus Holmberg and Steven Lorentz, and while it's not an offensive line by any means, they could take advantage of some weaker matchups and provide a bit of a spark.
Robertson this season has 19 points in 62 games (12G, 7A) and has been such a divisive figure for Toronto. First he wanted a trade, then signed a deal, put in a blistering preseason, a failure of a first half, then picked it up sporadically.
It's not a good sign when Toronto needs to rely on an inconsistent forward in order to get things alleviated for the time being, but all we can hope is Robertson picked up some defensive cues from his teammates and apply it on the bottom line; at least for one or two games.
