Mitch Marner's Potential Free Agency Replacement Emerges for the Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have no guarantee to get an extension done with Mitch Marner, even if it looks positive the chance he's back in Toronto next season.

However, there's no assurance the hometown Marner will be back as the team still don't have a contract in place beyond this season, with nearly every NHL team likely to make a play for the 27-year-old star winger.

Although the hope is that Marner will be back, there are teams within the league that can offer not just more money, but an even bigger spotlight to be the #1 option on offense.

A potential option to replace Mitch Marner on the wing with the Toronto Maple Leafs has been named.

Jonas Siegel & James Mirtle in 'The Athletic' report that Winnipeg Jets star winger Nikolaj Ehlers could be a "Plan B" in the case that Marner chooses elsewhere.

Ehlers, 29, has 24 goals, 39 assists, & 63 points in 66 games this season for Winnipeg.

The Jets currently lead the NHL in points with 106, and Ehlers has been a big reason as to why, for the best few years being one of the top wingers in the league.

However, it's the fact that Winnipeg is the top team in the NHL that may make signing Ehlers a difficulty.

Depending on how the Jets fare in the NHL playoffs, as well as how Toronto does, leaving Winnipeg for Toronto may not be as lucrative for Ehlers.

Another player that has been named along with Ehlers is Brock Boeser, with the 28-year-old's future in doubt in Vancouver with the Canucks crashing down the standings post-trade deadline, their attempt at restructuring after trading J.T. Miller having failed to improve things in Vancouver.

Although the main hope for the Toronto Maple Leafs is re-signing Mitch Marner to a long-term extension, there are options available to fill his loss that would still provide impact in the Leafs top-six.
