Injuries right before the Stanley Cup Playoffs are anything but ideal, but the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost forward David Kampf in tonight's game vs. Florida.
The divisional foes Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers are in a battle tonight that could go a long way in determining the 1st seed in the Atlantic Division.
But the Maple Leafs will have to try and earn 2 points while shorthanded, as forward David Kampf was injured and has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest because of an upper body ailment.
Kampf had come into the game centering the 4th line with Steven Loretnz and Pontus Holmberg. The announcement of his departure was confirmed early in the 3rd period, though the specific nature of his injury hasn't been confirmed.
Should he be forced from the lineup for more than just tonight's game, the Leafs would most likely turn to Nicolas Robertson to fill the gap; he was labeled as a healthy scratch.
He has 13 points (5G, 8A) in 58 games this year while averaging just under 13 minutes of time on the ice per contest.
He's also under contract for another 2 years with an AAV (average annual value) of $2.4 million; his contract automatically triggers a 10-team no trade clause beginning next year.
Kampf has been floated as a possibility of having the rest of his contract bought out after this year ends to give the club more financial flexibility. They have a pair of high-priced free agents that need new deals in Mitch Marner and John Tavares, two of the most important players on the roster.
