A major development changes the outlook of Mitch Marner's potential next contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It's not clear the exact details of what it would take for the Toronto Maple Leafs to sign Mitch Marner to a contract extension, although if one would have to guess, it would surely be above his current $10.9M salary.
Marner is likely not making more than the $13.25M Toronto gave Auston Matthews, at least in Toronto, and should make more than William Nylander at $11M.
As well, Marner has a comparable in Mikko Rantanen, who recently agreed to an eight-year contract with the Dallas Stars at $12M yearly.
So at the very least, Marner's contract number looks to be logically in the $12-13M from Toronto's end, with surely some other teams wanting a top-line star winger like Marner in their lineup potentially offering even more, even above Matthews.
A new report indicates such a deal is impossible, and that Mitch Marner's price could be too expensive for his contract projections depending on what he commands in an open market.

Mitch Marner May Potentially Surpass Auston Matthews In Contract Number

A recent report from insider Frank Seravalli suggests what could be the contract number for Mitch Marner's next deal.
Frank Seravalli of 'Daily Faceoff' has Mitch Marner the #1 free agent of the 2025 class, and using projections from AFP Analytics gives Marner an eight-year contract extension at $12.6M annually, or $100.8M in total.
Despite this, Seravalli says a potential maximum for Marner is $14M, or $112M in total, above Matthews in AAV.
The deal would lock up Mitch Marner long-term, giving him both more than Nylander & Rantanen, but still keeping him right under the contract given to Matthews.
This contract is also team-friendly for the Toronto local Marner, allowing for the team to have money to still sign John Tavares & Matthew Knies, both of whom who should make a decent amount.
Even though the deal is quite friendly to Toronto, there may be teams looking to offer more to the 27-year-old Marner.
Third among all NHL'ers in assists (69) and tied for 4th in points (93), Marner will be a highly valuable commodity that could very easy be offered a deal above the $12.6M mark, even perhaps up to $14M, as Seravalli suggested.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have an advantage in a longstanding relationship with a hometown player willing to take a discount, but ultimately a team offering far more than Toronto is not out of the realm of possibility.
With Marner potentially being offered more than Auston Matthews, the Leafs re-signing Mitch Marner may come down to how badly he wants to stay, likely passing up the highest offer if he wants to keep playing in Toronto.
