Jake McCabe brought some insight into Chris Tanev's injury, and praised the veteran's toughness after suffering a scary injury on Saturday night.
Chris Tanev was injured in the Toronto Maple Leafs game Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers after colliding head first with
Matvei Michkov.
Tanev, who was returning from a concussion,
left the game in a stretcher and did not return, once again away from the team.
McCabe praised his fellow defenseman for putting his body on the line, and discussed the challenge of playing through injuries.
McCabe Shares Honest Words About Playing Through Pain
Jake McCabe spoke on the challenge of Chris Tanev returning to action, understanding the difficulty that comes with returning from injury, and then into another one.
It's a brutal sport, and we pay the price. I don't think people understand how much laying the body on the line.
I'm doing it for my teammates, doing it to win. Chris is the toughest guy I've played with, and he's done it every night for over 17 years.
We're very fortunate to do what we do. I've had plenty of injuries head, joints, fingers, you name it.
But the short time we have in this game, the love that we have, the fulfillment I get from winning and battling nothing will match it.
As McCabe acknowledges, playing through injury
isn't always easy, and even tougher is when coming back when not at 100% leads to another injury, and more time away.
It also shows the respect that Tanev has in the Maple Leafs dressing room, trying to make his way back despite being banged up.
Why Chris Tanev's Toughness Earns Endless Respect in Toronto
Chris Tanev has earned respect from fans and teammates alike for putting his body on the line for the team.
Although not at perfect health, Tanev made his way onto the ice and is praised for how physical he plays each night.
While Tanev playing through pain is viewed as noble, some have also viewed it as risky, and as Tanev is back on the injury list, a foolish one.
Some fans have noted the question as to why Tanev was even playing if he wasn't completely healthy, risking both an injury to himself, but also potentially risking his own performance.
At 35, Tanev may not be too focused as much as he once was with longevity, giving it his all now knowing he doesn't have many years left to give.
For now, Chris Tanev waits to see when he will back for Toronto, and yet again may not wait until he's in perfect health to do so if it means getting the win.
