After a scary incident against Philadelphia, Chris Tanev is thankful things aren't worse, and his thoughts on concussions bring the injury into a new light for fans.
During Saturday's (Nov. 1) game against the Philadelphia Flyers, there was a very serious incident in which Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev took a hit to the back of the head from Matvei Michkov, and immediately slumped to the ice.
Lying motionless for several minutes, medical personnel rushed to tend to him, eventually stretchering him off the ice. He indicated he was okay, and his later discharge from a Philadelphia hospital seemed to confirm it wasn't a worst-case scenario.
It was Tanev's first game coming back from a concussion, so it already exacerbated an injury that can cause a world of troubles both in the short and long term.
What Chris Tanev Said About His Concussion Experience
While there's no real clue as to when he will be back, Tanev himself knows that he got a bit lucky when it comes to the severity of the type of injury.
It was a subject he eerily noted to reporters after his first concussion, setting the stage to show how serious Saturday's injury could be:
I don't think any one mimics another one. Sometimes your symptoms may last a while; sometimes they don't. Sometimes they're headaches; sometimes they're just head pressure.
Could be your mood. I mean, there's so many different things a person can feel, and I don't think any one is the same.

That's a bit more haunting now knowing that it's such a wildcard as to how Tanev and his body is going to respond to the damage. It could range from a slight headache or feeling irritable to devastating migraines and severe mood swings.
Why Fans Are Reacting Strongly After His Latest Injury
His teammates were also incredibly concerned, with both Nick Robertson and Auston Matthews shedding light on the seriousness of the situation:
Very unfortunate. I'll be praying for him. You know, he's come back from a head injury, and you don't wanna see something like that. - Nick Robertson
It's a tough feeling. He's such an integral part of this team and a guy that brings so much experience. And anytime you know they're bringing out a stretcher, it's never a good feeling deep inside.
So, we're all thinking about him and praying for him and hoping for the best.

But it was also the Leafs fans who were holding their breath and hoping for the best when it came to Tanev, and showed how beloved his is throughout the entire organization from staff to fans to teammates:
There were some fans who also believed that the Maple Leafs may have rushed Tanev back too quickly, and it could have led to this more serious incident:
We know that Tanev has a concussion history, and the fact that this is his second not only this season, but in the span of a couple of weeks is a bleak footnote to an already rough season.
For now, we can just all count our blessings that the injury wasn't worse, and we can eventually see the warrior spirit of Tanev back on the ice once again.
But with another concussion under his belt, Tanev knows that he dodged a major bullet, where things could have been a lot, lot worse.
