The Toronto Maple Leafs have given an update regarding defenseman Chris Tanev after he spent the night in a Philadelphia hospital after a serious incident on Saturday night against the Flyers.
Yesterday night was a very scary night for the Toronto Maple Leafs as defenseman Chris Tanev was hit from behind from Flyers forward Matvei Michkov and immediately fell to the ice, laying motionless for several minutes while medical officials from both teams tended to him.
Eventually he was stretchered off the ice and while he gave a thumbs up, it was still a very volatile and touchy situation. Craig Berube mentioned he would be evaluated in Philly, then the team will go from there.
Chris Tanev Was Kept Overnight in Philadelphia for Testing Before Being Cleared
Well they have announced that Tanev indeed spent the night in a Philadelphia hospital, but was cleared on Sunday morning and allowed to go home to Toronto:
It's an incredible turnaround from what could have been, though the team has neglected to give any further updates at this time.
Tanev was returning from injury against the Flyers after missing the last few games with concussion-like symptoms, and for him to suffer another head injury so soon after is extremely dangerous for both his short and long-term outlook.
As with any head injury or concussion, this is going to take a lot of time to fully heal and for as much of a warrior as Tanev is, the human body can only take so much and this latest injury might keep him out for a long time.
Why the Leafs Can't Afford Chris Tanev to Miss a Long Period of Time
For Toronto, that means they need to step up their game in his absence and won't have the luxury of being bailed out by Tanev who is almost always in the right place at the right time.
Guys like Brandon Carlo and Philippe Myers (who will presumably slot in) have to be better and can't be watching the puck or getting complacent in their own end.
It also puts a lot more pressure on the forwards to help in their own end and can't let their opponents generate anything past the blueline. If they can get their rush defense in check, it'll at least make Tanev's absence tolerable.
For now though, the team and their fans are just going to hold their breath until they know what the future holds for Chris Tanev.
