Craig Berube Takes Aim at Ridly Greig Following Altercation With Anthony Stolarz
Craig Berube had some thoughts after Game Two regarding Anthony Stolarz trying to hack at Ridly Greig and seemingly gave the goalie his full support on the matter.
Well you could call Game Two for Toronto a success even though it wasn't the easiest game.
Max Domi had to be the hero, and while it's certainly an
unexpected but welcome change, Toronto should have been able to tighten things up a bit more overall.
But a win is a win, no matter how you get it and a lot of that credit also has to be given to Anthony Stolarz. Not only did he shut Ottawa down at almost every opportunity, but he was also not afraid to show them he's not gonna let anyone intimidate him either.
Though it was certainly Stolarz's right to do so, the focus on smacking Greig could have given him some issues had Ottawa ended up scoring due to a distracted goaltender.
Things turned out fine, and afterwards head coach Craig Berube was asked about what he thought about his goalie going after the Senators forward crowding his crease.
In true Berube fashion, he seemed to relish in his goaltender's actions:
It gets annoying after a while, right? And I've seen that with goalies before. I really don't have a problem with it.
Berube, known for using his fists a lot in his career, has to be happy with the fact his team is showing the same amount of recklessness he showed in his career albeit with less fisticuffs and more in terms of annoying the Senators.
Auston Matthews smashed Greig's stick,
Matthew Knies basically told him to watch his back, and Anthony Stolarz did what he did. Clearly he struck a nerve, and Toronto has done a good job at trying to dish out some justice without being too undisciplined.
It's part of the mind games with Greig and the rest of the Senators. It's hard to envision superstars like Auston Matthews or
Mitch Marner blowing a fuse or getting uber-aggressive but history has proven otherwise, and with everyone fighting for each other, nothing feels off limits.
Making sure their opponents have their head on a swivel is only going to help the Maple Leafs as they head to Ottawa for Game 3 and 4.
If a distracted Senators team is too worried about getting smoked by a body check or think twice about crashing the net, it throws their plan into disarray.
But we'll have to see how Game 3 plays out because the atmosphere will certainly play a big factor into how Toronto approaches things.
Just don't expect Craig Berube to get upset with his team if they use some unsavory tactics to gain the advantage.
This is the playoffs after all: Anything goes.
