Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube gave his thoughts on Ridly Greig's controversial actions involving John Tavares.

After the first game of the Battle of Ontario, it's safe to say we're in for a crazy series if the first game was any indication. Things started off hot (literally) before transitioning to a fiery game that saw the Maple Leafs come out swinging and earn themselves a 6-2 victory.
It was a collective effort from every line, and the Core Four all had multiple points; it's a great sign that this may not just be a year they could win, but THE year.
However, there was still some negatives that happened, mainly how Ridly Greig crosschecked John Tavares and received only a two-minute minor as opposed to a major penalty or possibly an ejection. No one was happy about it, and none other than coach Craig Berube.
Speaking about the incident post game, the Maple Leafs bench boss wasn't thrilled and implored reports to ask the NHL exactly what went down:
That's not my call. We're not going to focus on that. Call the league!
In a game filled with a lot of tension, it was still extremely out of line for Greig to go after Tavares in such a manner, and it certainly warrants a look from the league's Player Safety Department.
Yes the playoffs are another level of hockey, however there's never a place for this type of behavior. Understandably Greig was frustrated with how his team started the game, and boy did the Leafs make him (and Ottawa's other penalty takers) pay.
Three power play goals helped the team gain the series advantage, and if they can continue to draw penalties at such an elite rate, they can basically take control of things at their own pace.
Thankfully Tavares wasn't injured on the play, and was able to continue the game and Grieg can't be all upset considering he scored a goal, but the fact remains that he needs to be punished more severely, especially if there was intent to injure.
The Maple Leafs will hope they can head into Game Two with an advantage of Greig being suspended, but if they don't have that luxury, they can always just keep doing what they did Sunday and good things will come.
