Ridly Greig Under Fire for Questionable Hit on Anthony Stolarz That Sparked Outrage
Ridly Grieg is under fire yet again for trying to take out Anthony Stolarz's legs during Game One, leading some to believe he deserves some punishment for it.
It was an intense and heated game between the
Ottawa Senators and
Toronto Maple Leafs in Game One of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Not only was the crowd on fire,
but the arena too and the end of the game harkened back to memories of the intense battles of the early 2000s.
Things got especially testy when Ottawa forward
Ridly Greig decided to take a head shot at
John Tavares, and while
he didn't receive any additional punishment for his actions, it certainly warranted it.
That wasn't the only thing though that Greig should be held accountable for, considering he also tried to take out Anthony Stolarz during the game as well.
While he was being pestered and in the process of being taken down, clearly you can see Greig stick out his leg in order to clip Stolarz and send him sprawling.
Fans were shocked and very angry towards Greig and his attempt to chop Stolarz down.
It's safe to say that people are not happy with Greig and this type of action should have at least warranted a penalty, if not further punishment for attempting to injure Stolarz.
What makes things even more egregious is that Greig really shouldn't have stayed in the game to begin with, and the NHL can't keep letting this type of behavior slide because someone is going to get hurt if they turn a blind eye.
Fans were even surprised that analyst Kevin Bieksa; known for having more of an old-school and rough n' tumble mentality, called out Greig for trying to take a run at Stolarz.
It's a sign that things aren't really going to settle down anytime soon for either the Senators or the Maple Leafs and no doubt the intensity is going to ramp up. Fans are already making their presence known, and it could be a huge advantage for Toronto heading into their second game.
But Greig needs to start being more careful with how he approaches things. If he keeps acting the way he is, don't expect the Maple Leafs to enact some punishment of their own regardless of the NHL's ruling.
