Travis Green Blasts the Maple Leafs After Chaotic and Controversial Game 1
To say the first game of both Toronto and Ottawa's Stanley Cup Playoff run was chaotic is a massive understatement. Before the puck dropped we had
some extra intensity with a fire that started in the arena, though thankfully it was over pretty quickly.
But the chaos extended past that and with a wild and crazy game that saw a ridiculously egregious call involving
John Tavares, and saw Toronto come out the victors by a score of 6-2, a great segment game even if Ottawa was trying to play a bit dirty.
Which is why it's a bit odd that Senators coach
Travis Green called out the Maple Leafs for what he perceived as diving, and wasn't too thrilled they didn't get punished:
I thought there were a couple calls they did a good job selling.
It's crazy for Green to say that Toronto got away with things when
Ridly Greig ended up trying to behead John Tavares with a cross-check, and only received a minor penalty.
But it wasn't just that incident, as the game saw a total of 52 PIM with Ottawa receiving the brunt of the total with 36.
Then the third period happened.
15 penalties in the third alone, with the majority of then coming at the end of the game, where things got more than heated and several players from both sides were assessed roughing calls.
Everyone seemingly was involved in the fracas, showing how important things were even at the end of the game.
For Green's complaints, maybe he should focus on his team being more disciplined as a whole and also understand that referees might overlook a thing or two in the heat of the game, and if Toronto is good at drawing penalties, that's just a part of strategy, as much as it sucks for the Senators.
He also employs
Tim Stutzle on his team, a player who has consistently shown that he can and will dive to try and give his team an advantage so it's a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.
Craig Berube's team was able to keep themselves disciplined (for the most part until that ending firestorm of calls) and that can only bode well for them going into Game Two and beyond.
If they can get the Senators to keep acting out and be a nuisance, then Green isn't going to have to complain for too long.
