Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube gave a critical update regarding the status of Anthony Stolarz going into the team's two-game slate in Florida.
A lot of questions surround whether or not Anthony Stolarz will end up playing the rest of Round Two after
Sam Bennett's elbow
knocked him out of Game 1; and it didn't look good at first glance.
Although he ended up looking better the day after, he is in no condition to play yet and as of now, won't be making the trip to Florida according to Craig Berube.
Otherwise, there is no actual update regarding his health status or progress, all we know is he is doing well per the head coach.
Stolarz Absence Both A Blessing And A Curse
It's both a positive and a negative that Stolarz won't be with the team, considering that it's best he rest up as much as possible, and Toronto has enough good goaltending to weather the storm.
But it's just an unfortunate situation altogether, given how good Stolarz has been throughout the entirety of the season.
Brought in to be the backup for
Joseph Woll, he came in and took over the starter's role and then ran with it towards the end of the season.
Even though he missed a month with a knee injury,
Stolarz posted a 21-8-3 record with a 21.4 GAA and .926 SV%; he's been spectacular in his first season, and is signed through next year.
For now though it's going to be the Joseph Woll show. While he was shaky in Game 1 at times, he really held it down in Game 2 and made several key saves to keep Toronto in the game.
Even
Matt Murray, a two-time Cup winner himself was impressed.
Post-game, Woll was humble in his approach, saying he just needed to stick to his game and do what he knows he can.
Woll so far this postseason has only played twice, posting a 2-0-0 record with a 4.01 GAA and .875 SV%; numbers that on paper are pedestrian at best but it doesn't factor in Woll's clutch factor.
He gets better as the game progresses, so seeing him down a few goals early on isn't necessarily surprising, and if the Maple Leafs can prevent a lot of first and second period chances, he'll hold it down late game.
For now, all we can look forward to though is Stolarz getting ready to come back into the fold, whenever that may be. It won't be Games 3 or 4, but if Toronto needs him a bit later on?
It wouldn't be surprising to see him lace up the skates.
