The Maple Leafs held a morning skate earlier today in preparation to their first game back from the holiday break against the Ottawa Senators.

On the ice, a major change in the defensive unit suggests that a young player is struggling after being injured at training camp.

Connor Timmins, the young defenseman, practiced on the Leafs' fourth pair, with injured Mark Giordano.

Many fans were optimists when they saw how Timmins played in the training camp, but a major injury slowed him down.

This season, in 13 games, Timmins scored six points, including one goal.

With Liljegren's return, as well as Benoit and Lagesson's rises, Timmins was slowly pushed to the team's last pairing. This should create a healthy internal competition between players that will push them to perfrom better.

As seen on Maple Leafs Daily - Leafs' projected lines point to one player potentially being phased out
