Howard Berger has released massive news on the future of the Leafs. Per Berger, he believes the Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes are working out a deal for Mitch Marner.
While Berger does not reveal any details of who is in the trade, he shares who he wants from Carolina.
Marner for Jaccob Slavin?
It likely would not be one for one and the cap is difficult to work out here. Slavin is arguably the best defensive defenseman in the NHL and comes in with a cap hit of only $5.3m.
Meanwhile, Marner is over double his cap hit at $10.9m. Both have two years on their deal but if the trade is Marner (50% retained) for Slavin one-for-one, I don't even know if Carolina would accept that.
If Carolina is set on acquiring Marner, they are likely going to have to part with a young forward like Martin Necas or Seth Jarvis as well as a defenseman like Brett Pesce and some picks/prospects on top of that.
For a mock trade involving Marner, this is more realistic.
To CAR:Mitch Marner ($3 million retained)
To TOR:Brett PesceSeth Jarvis2023 first-round pick2024 second-round pick
While this is not Jaccob Slavin, it is arguably more valuable than Slavin and involves pieces Carolina is surely more okay with moving.
