BREAKING: Leafs Make Surprising Roster Move Ahead of Game One
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a surprise move ahead of their Game 1 matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
After already deciding to sit youngster
Matthew Knies in favor of the grittier veteran Wayne Simmonds, Toronto has made yet another big decision.
The Leafs have announced that Marlies Goalie Erik Kallgren has been recalled as an emergency playoff Goalie. Kallgren has been called up as insurance with the absence of
Matt Murray, bring protection for the tandem of
Ilya Samsonov &
Joseph Woll.
It's unclear how long Kallgren will be with the team for, but with the Leafs AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, playing in the Calder Cup Playoffs on the 27th, it's possible the hope is to have Kallgren return by then. If not, then Keith Pettruzzelli, who has shared netminding duties for the Marlies, will take the mantle.
Kallgren, 26, has played 10 NHL Games for Toronto this season, having a 3-2-4 record, along with a 2.67 GAA and a .898SV%. The Marlies, who were the North Division Champions, take on either Laval or Utica in the second round, having secured a first round bye.
It's unclear how the Leafs Goaltending situation will play out as the series go on, but with Kallgren the third option instead of an inexperienced option, Toronto may feel a bit safer in net, although many questions are still unresolved.
