According to Trege Wilson, who covers the Montreal Canadiens for The Hockey Writers and Habs Unfiltered, a three-team trade would be ideal for Carey Price.
With his $10.5M per year salary for four more seasons, Wilson mentioned on Tony Marinaro's Sick Podcast that this would be the most plausible possibility.
An interesting suggestion:
Here are the explanations of Félix Forget from DansLesCoulisses website:
« I'll use the example of the trade that brought
David Savard to Tampa Bay in 2020-21. At the time, Savard was a member of the Blue Jackets and the Lightning didn't have the money to accommodate his salary or even 50% of it.
To make it happen, then, the Blue Jackets sent Savard (withholding 50% of his salary) to the Red Wings in return for Brian Lashoff. Then, immediately thereafter, the Red Wings traded Savard to the Lightning (holding back 50% of his salary that was already being held back at 50% by the Blue Jackets, so the Red Wings held back the equivalent of 25% of the salary) for Tampa Bay to get Savard at 25% of his salary. »
A scenario involving Price could look like this:
The Arizona Coyotes could retain 50% ($5.25M) of his salary, and then the Coyotes could trade him to the Vegas Golden Knights, and they too would retain 50% of the remaining salary (so $2.625M).
So, in summary, a team like Vegas could pay Price $2.625M per year.
