Maple Leafs Have A New Proven Cup Winning Strategy
Sportsnet host Justin Bourne indicated last week that the Leafs are changing their defensive system to the same one the Lightning used when they won back to back cups.
Leafs Switch to Winning Defensive Strategy
The new system is a hybrid model, borrowing aspects from both zone and man to man defensive systems. Andrew Brewer of 200 Foot Hockey describes how the system works.
"Now when the puck goes low to high, players attach to closest player and get into "man on man" coverage, Focus on D1 & F1 Difference."
Andrew also explains how zone coverage typically works and he provides a graphic so that we can see the differences between the systems.
He also noted how this is the type of system Vegas used last year. Clearly, both systems can work as Vegas and Tampa have won using the different strategies, but it may be more effective with certain rosters. Andrew addresses this as well.
"The advantage of the "Hybrid" is it allows you to pressure the puck quicker and potentially kill plays earlier to get out of your zone...this works best when roster is better than opponent."
Only time will tell if this system actually works for the Leafs but we do know that with the right personnel, it absolutely should.
