Mitch Marner and Lars Eller had words for each other on the bench, and Leafs fans are asking where this Marner came from.
Vegas Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner was seen on the bench during the Knights game Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators getting into an apparent heated exchange with Senators forward Lars Eller.
Eller went over to the Vegas Golden Knights bench where he shared some words with Marner and Pavel Dorofeyev, with Eller and Marner visibly animated at each other before their argument was broken up by a referee.
It's not clear what Eller was exactly upset about, or why he was upset specifically at Marner, but Eller caught a high-stick prior to the incident, although it's not known who between Marner and Eller initiated the argument.
Ottawa defeated Vegas 4-3 in a shootout, with Marner missing on
a potential tying shot for the Golden Knights.
What this Marner-Eller exchange reveals about his edge in Vegas
Mitch Marner's willingness to get confrontational and engage may reflect a more competitive moment in a new environment.
Although a reliable defensive winger with good awareness and positioning in his own end, Marner had not been typically viewed while in Toronto as a physical player, or more specifically someone who sought out confrontation.
Marner had been viewed by some as a player who didn't have interest in engaging in fights or being too rough, focused more on producing offense and safe, less flashy defense.
But despite Marner getting into the altercation with Eller, some Leafs fans seeing the video aren't convinced this clip is proof of any meaningful change in his playing style.
Why this clip stings for Leafs fans who saw a different Marner
Toronto Maple Leafs fans, as they have since he was traded to Vegas, are once again discussing Mitch Marner.
Fans are discussing Marner's recent heated exchange with Lars Eller, with many Leafs fans having jokes at Marner's offense, claiming that he wouldn't back up his talk.
Leafs fan have continued to track Marner's transition to Vegas, in part being his departure followed years of contract debates, playoff scrutiny, and questions over the reliability of the former Leafs core.
Leafs Twitter came together alongside their provincial rivals to criticize Marner, for some Toronto fans his departure
having left continued anger, and Marner still dictating discussion in Toronto, with some fans following his play, or more specifically his mistakes, in Vegas.
For some Leafs fans, it would appear they don't see Marner speaking on Eller as a positive, but instead framing it as Marner being "all talk".
After the Leafs lost in the playoffs last season to the Florida Panthers, Mitch Marner was faced with the most scrutiny as blame for their loss, an easy target being an expiring contract who has been criticized by some fans and analysts for a lack of physicality.
Some Toronto fans see Marner's words as "lip service", that the player they saw as a Leaf doesn't have the aggressiveness to back it up on the ice.
The online reaction to Marner's play show that some Leafs fans continue to scrutinize Marner following his departure, and aren't buying the idea that he's become a more aggressive player all of a sudden.
