Rasmus Andersson is a name the Maple Leafs are now connected to

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in conversation to acquire Calgary Flames RHD Rasmus Andersson, according to a report.

Analyst and former Leaf Jay Rosehill of 'The Leafs Nation', said that the Leafs are "actively trying" to acquire Andersson from Calgary.

According to Rosehill, Andersson is a player that fits the Leafs roster and someone who's name he has heard connected to Toronto from a team source.

Elliotte Friedman followed up later on independently on Sportsnet 590 'The Fan', mentioning that Rasmus Andersson was a player the Leafs wanted at the last trade deadline, but ultimately a deal wasn't able to come to fruition.

Friedman added that while interest existed at the deadline, and still exists, he says that it would be hard to get a deal done at this stage.

Rasmus Andersson is a player who fits the Leafs interest in as a right-handed physical defenseman.

Leafs GM Brad Treliving was general manager in Calgary, previously having led the team with Andersson on the Flames roster.

As Friedman notes, a deal involving Andersson now may come with some challenges.

Flames owner Murray Edwards said recently that he wanted Calgary, who are currently in the last place in the league, to not go into a rebuild just yet.

Another issue for Toronto is the lack of trade return options. The Leafs have traded away their next two first round draft picks, and have moved on already top prospects in Fraser Minten and Nikita Grebenkin.

It's not been made clear how high the level of interest is in Andersson, or what point any discussions have gotten to between the two sides.

It remains to be seen how far things will go for Brad Treliving to reunite with his former defenseman Andersson in Toronto, and fit the team's profile and needs.
