With the Maple Leafs looking to make changes this summer, Max Domi's name has been floating around as a potential trade candidate in order to shake things up.
It isn't too surprising to see that the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be active this summer when it comes to
both the free agent and trade market. Not only are they going to be bringing in a lot of new faces, but saying goodbye to some as well.
There are a few names being floated around in terms of who might leave, with
David Kampf and
Calle Jarnkrok the likeliest candidates due to their fairly cheap contracts and lack of fit with the new direction the team is going in.
Max Domi potentially a top trade candidate: James Mirtle
But one name who has popped up from time to time who might be gaining some traction is Max Domi, who hasn't played up to his contract since signing his contract extension. A very cheap deal after July 1, he could also be a candidate to be traded and one analyst believes that other teams are definitely interested.
Maple Leafs analyst and NHL Insider James Mirtle spoke recently on the Leaf Report podcast and explained that the team has garnered some interest in Domi and with his ability to play all three positions up front; he could very well be gone.
Domi, 30, struggled this past season with only 33 points in 74 games (8G, 25A) which is a significant dip from last season, and is the second-lowest point total of his career.
So far in his time in Toronto, he has 80 points in 154 games (17G, 63A) which shows that while his playmaking has been respectable, the goal-scoring potential has been very rough (especially for a former two-time 20 goal scorer).
Would Toronto really trade Max Domi?
But he makes only $2-million and change after July 1 when he gets his bonus paid out, and would be a very reasonable 3C/4C option for a team needing a veteran presence as well as some secondary scoring potential in the playoffs.
It wouldn't be too shocking to see the son of Leafs legend Tie Domi be on the move this summer, with a new mentality and several changes expected; Domi could be a casualty.
It's not personal though, it's just business and Domi would be well aware of that. It would be a little upsetting to see him go, especially given his family's legacy with the team and while he does have his flaws; is the ultimate team player and gives everything he has every time he steps on the ice.
But if Toronto is desperate to make that DNA change they want so badly, then that means desperate measures must be taken; and Domi is one of the unfortunate casualties.
