A late third period goal from Max Domi powered the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames.
Morgan Frost opened the scoring for Calgary earlier from a pass off of former Leaf
Nazem Kadri for the only goal of the first period.
Domi got Toronto back even with his second goal of the season, with
Joel Farabee and
Matthew Knies trading goals late between Calgary and Toronto respectively to end the second period 2-2.
William Nylander, who was making his return from injury, had an assist on the Knies goal.
Knies added another goal while on the power play to give Toronto their first lead of the game before Calgary got a goal from rookie
Samuel Honzek, his first NHL goal, to tie things 3-3.
Max Domi called the game as the Leafs took over a Flames turnover in their own end, getting the goal off a bouncing puck to give Toronto the 4-3 win.
Anthony Stolarz exited
with a win, getting 26 saves on 29 shots, but the big story being two-goal nights for Knies and Domi, for Domi being a night he needed.
Max Domi's Two-Goal Night Reminds Fans Why Toronto Believed in Him
Max Domi's two goal night was a major boost to the Leafs forward who has been waiting for a breakout following a rough stretch to start the season.
Domi has been in the midst of a slow start with just a single point in his first nine points, an offensive struggle dating back to last season in which Domi had been looking to rekindle his offensive potential.
Going up and down the lineup, Domi has bounced from the first line to the fourth, as he played tonight, but has showcased what could be a pathway back up the Leafs depth chart.
Late in the game, Max Domi moved up to the second line with Matthew Knies and
John Tavares, hinting at what could be the next opportunity for Domi to rebound and prove himself again in the Leafs offense.
How Domi's Chemistry With Tavares and Nylander Sparked the Leafs' Offense
Max Domi has made a case to be tried again on the Leafs top-six after a standout night, and the Leafs may take it.
Having struggled
to get much going, an issue that he's dealt with last season as well, it was a night that could carry Domi into a more positive headspace, and gain some much-needed confidence for the 30-year-old.
With
Scott Laughton soon to return, Max Domi's spot at center may no longer be needed, and after tonight, may have given him a second life in Toronto's top-six.
