Chris Tanev has been placed on Injured Reserve, with the Leafs defenseman expected to miss time with an upper-body injury.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenseman Chris Tanev on Injured Reserve, and have recalled defenseman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.
Tanev was injured in Toronto's 5-2 loss on Tuesday to the New Jersey Devils, exiting in the second period with what was later revealed by the team to be an upper-body injury.
Leafs head coach Craig Berube said previously that he had expected Tanev to miss time, calling the defenseman «questionable» to appear for the Leafs back-to-back series against the Buffalo Sabres.
Tanev will miss at least a week on IR, and will be eligible to return to the lineup against the Columbus Blue Jackets on the 29th.
Tanev, 35, has appeared in seven games this season for Toronto with an assist. Tanev had three goals and 18 points in 75 games played last season with the Leafs.
Mermis, recalled from the AHL, split time last season between the Leafs and the Utah Hockey Club, appearing in four games and having an assist, the point coming with Toronto.
Mermis was waived by Toronto in December of 2024, claimed by Utah. Mermis was placed back on waivers weeks later, re-claimed by Toronto.

Chris Tanev's Absence Another Early Blow To The Leafs Season

The loss of Chris Tanev is yet another loss for the Toronto Maple Leafs who have been facing difficulty fielding their whole roster early on in the season.
The Leafs lost Scott Laughton in preseason due to injury, with his return to the ice looking close, but still undetermined as of yet.
Joseph Woll is away from the team for personal reasons, with Craig Berube saying yesterday that he wasn't in contact with the goaltender, and that there isn't a timeline for his return.
Marshall Rifai is another player currently on Injured reserve, losing a part of the Leafs depth, and someone who could have potentially had come up in Tanev's place.
For the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have been looking to be more physically intense and more defensively engaged, losing one of their best physical assets in Chris Tanev is a giant loss for the team if he is out for an extended period of time.
