According to David Pagnotta, the Toronto Maple Leafs are really hoping that Nick Robertson turns it around as the trade rumors around him continue to heat up.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs season continues, there are a lot of questions about the lineup considering
how inconsistent they have been, with several of their players lacking offensively and not showing the type of grit and aggressiveness expected of them.
One name who has been under the microscope for the last few years, but especially now is Nick Robertson. While there's no shortage of talent, there has been with his consistency, and without a goal yet; it's more of the same for the polarizing forward.
Brad Treliving Holding Firm on Nick Robertson's Trade Value
It's why his name has surfaced so heavily in trade rumors over the past couple of seasons and they don't look like they are going to slow down anytime soon.
They can give him away, someone will take him, but Brad Treliving has said that there's a price; unless that price is lowered he's gonna stick around.
It's hard to know what that price exactly is, but it's at least enough to make Treliving want to keep Robertson around, and if he is going to replace him either it has to be a prime draft pick or an NHL-ready player capable of helping right away.
How This Decision Could Shape the Maple Leafs' Forward Depth This Season
Toronto doesn't have too many assets, and they are hoping that dangling a 24-year old potential top-six player will bring them enough. A player like
Rickard Rakell would be a great replacement, and the Maple Leafs would be sacrificing youth and cap space for a better player.
But beyond that, this is the reason why the team added so many faces this summer, it's to add depth for when players like Robertson falter.
A guy like Sammy Blais deserves a look given what Craig Berube knows he can bring, and he has a specific role and plays it well.
You can hardly blame Robertson though for his slow start this season. He had his line set the past two seasons and just wasn't able to bring it together but with many new players and unfortunate injuries; he can't find a rhythm.
Keeping him and hoping he turns it around as opposed to dumping him off is certainly the nobler of the two options, but being noble doesn't necessarily bring you success, or championships.
There's a definite need for teams to add someone like Nick Robertson, who is begging for a fresh start somewhere.
At this point, the Maple Leafs should probably reconsider some previous offers and maybe make a deal involving Robertson, because it's becoming abundantly clear that the more he disappoints, the uglier this situation could get.
