Three weeks after losing John Tavares to injury, the Maple Leafs are one step closer to getting him back as he returned to practice ready to step back in the lineup.
On Oct. 15th, the Maple Leafs were in a tough match-up against the Buffalo Sabres when they lost John Tavares after an awkward collision with Josh Norris, leading to him leaving the game.
He was given a week-to-week designation and while there was hope he could make a quick comeback, it's been a few weeks since we've seen the former captain in the lineup.
John Tavares receives full clearance at Maple Leafs practice
But on Friday, he was one step closer to getting back into game action and when he appeared at Maple Leafs practice - he looked like the Tavares we'd expect to see:
-
Tavares was seen taking the ice in a regular practice jersey as the Maple Leafs prepared for their weekend back-to-back starting with Montreal on Saturday night, a must-win for the team if there ever was one.
If he does indeed come back into the lineup, then the odds are that he will slide back into his 2C position, a job that was held down admirably by Nick Paul in his absence. Paul will likely head back to the 3C position alongside Colton Sissons and either Vinni Lettieri or Dakota Joshua.
Tavares recorded seven points in seven games this year and was looking to be continuing to drive the offensive side of things before he went down.
No one is happier about Tavares' return than Gavin McKenna
His return though can only mean good things though - especially for one player.
Gavin McKenna is no doubt going to be happy to see his mentor, running mate, and landlord back in the fray. It's no coincidence McKenna was benched the same night Tavares left, and his minutes have been very inconsistent without #91.
With him back in the fold, it's likely that Hiller is at least going to try that early-season line of McKenna - Tavares - Nylander, though that leaves a lot to be desired defensively and the blue line needs to be on their toes at all times.
But it also gives McKenna more than just a familiar person to play alongside, but someone who can settle him down a little bit.
As good as Auston Matthews and the other vets have been at giving him confidence - he's extremely close with Tavares. Heck, they just checked out a junior hockey game together like they were a father and son.
That bond is something that the Maple Leafs need to take advantage of, and with Tavares nearing a return this weekend? They'll get their chance.
Do you think John Tavares will score in his return to the Maple Leafs lineup?
