Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares went down in the third period against the Buffalo Sabres after a collision with forward Josh Norris.

Just a few minutes into the third period, John Tavares found himself on the ice and in pain as he favored what appeared to be his left leg.

In the clip below, you can see Tavares get taken down after an awkward collision with Buffalo Sabres center Josh Norris.

Tavares eventually got up on his own and was able to make it back to the bench; however, he appeared to be in a ton of pain and has since gone back to the locker room.

At the time of Tavares going down with the injury, the Toronto Maple Leafs were winning the game by a score of 4-2. Since going down, the score has been tied by the Sabres at 4-4-.

Tavares also had two assists as Kirill Marchenko was able to score his first hat trick as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.

What could this injury mean for the Maple Leafs?

At this time, it is too early to say what this is going to mean for the Maple Leafs going forward. Ultimately, the extent of the injury has not been made clear.

Tavares is currently being evaluated in the locker room. Given how much time is left in the game, it appears unlikely that he will be able to return.

If Tavares has to miss time, it would be devastating to the Leafs and their offense, which has been clicking at a high level as of late.

The top-six has been sensational to start the year, and seeing Tavares go down could lead to a stifling of the team's momentum.

This remains a developing story that we will keep tabs on.
