The Rangers are looking for goalie insurance and added former Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer to the mix, bringing him aboard their AHL team.
After Igor Shesterkin's untimely season-ending injury, the New York Rangers are in the market for goaltending help. They have kicked the tires on players like Anthony Stolarz, and currently have youngster Dylan Garand holding things down in the meantime.
James Reimer earns yet another contract but this time in the AHL
Well they added some valuable insurance on Thursday by signing James Reimer to a contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack - the team's AHL affiliate.
-
Reimer signed a PTO with the club as they look to give him some reps and see if he is able to help the Rangers or the Wolf Pack in any capacity.
A veteran of eight clubs over 16 years, Reimer had a 7-4-2 record with the Ottawa Senators last season in 14 games (13 starts) with a 2.42 GAA and .886 SV%.
For his career, the former Maple Leafs netminder has a 232-191-67 record with a 2.87 GAA and .907 SV%.
Why James Reimer would be a great asset for New York
If you are looking for a player who can give the Rangers solid goaltending for cheap, it's Reimer. Somehow never out of a job, the long-time journeyman has still been able to help ease the bleeding for many teams over the years.
He's not as he once was but while the Rangers figure out a more permanent solution, then he would be a great fit alongside Garand. If New York does indeed make a deal for a goalie, Reimer still provides help to the Wolf Pack as a veteran leader in the AHL.
The combination of experience, reliability, affordability, and versatility has led the Rangers to take a swing at Reimer and potentially bring him into the NHL squad. If that's the case, then make it team number nine for the goalie - moving him into exclusive company with another goalie who made history this year in Cam Talbot.
He may be older, but there's a reason New York targeted Reimer over anyone else.
Do you think the Rangers will sign James Reimer to an NHL contract?
