After being let go by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brendan Shanahan has found a new home and it has a deep connection to his old team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs made a slew of changes over the past year with one of the biggest being the fact they let Team President Brendan Shanahan go after neglecting to renew his contract, as the team looked for a new voice to usher in a new era.
He was interviewed for a job with the New York Islanders, and has since moved back to the NHL as part of their hockey operations department. He also took a job with Hockey Canada overseeing men's junior hockey.
Shanahan joins former MLSE owner working with the PWHA
But he now has another position as he's going to be a part of the PWHA, joining Kilmer Sports Venture as a strategic advisor. There's still a Maple Leafs connection though, as Kilmer is owned by Larry Tanenbaum, the former co-owner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
He also gets a chance to reconnect with Jayna Hefford, who worked alongside him previously when the Maple Leafs and PWHA had a partnership and seems very excited to be back in the fold when it comes to working with Hefford and Tanenbaum again:
To see (Hefford) now taking on the PWHL and to see its growth, and to be approached by Larry to partner with him and serve as a an adviser, if and when I'm needed, made a lot of sense. It's certainly the individuals involved, but just also women's sport and women's hockey is certainly a passion.
The PWHA has grown into a very popular league since its inception, and Kilmer has the distinction of being the only Canadian investor in the leagues the decision to hire Shanahan was clearly thought out and well-researched.
Shanahan isn't running things, just there for advice
As important as a job this is, don't think that Shanahan is just going to start running things over at Kilmer. He's simply there as a strategic advisor to see how the organization and the PWHA can expand and grow women's hockey in Canada.
Shanahan is as born and bred a hockey player as can be, and admitted that women's hockey holds a place deep in his heart, so he is only going to try and help the league thrive. He's already advised Hockey Canada and recommended some serious changes, and the same could be coming to the PWHA.
But it's all for the sake of protecting the players, growing the game, and making sure that not only is the league profitable, but it's beneficial for teams, their players, and the fans.
Do you think Brendan Shanahan was a good or bad fit for the Maple Leafs?
