This former NHL referee took to social media over the past two days to spark controversy over a recent play during a Toronto Maple Leafs game, making fun of fans in the process.
Tim Peel Makes Fun of Leaf Fans After Lyubushkin Hit Sparking Controversy
During the Toronto versus New York game Saturday night, the Ilya Lyubushkin suffered a minor head injury after Rangers forward Matt Rempe delivered a huge hit on him. Many Leaf fans were upset, as they thought that Rempe left his feet to deliver the hit to Lyubushkin's head.
However, former Referee Tim Peel had his own opinion on the hit, and shared it on social media. This immediately sparked controversy between him and Leaf fans.
Peel, who was previously fired from being an official after a hot mic caught him saying he was trying to give a team a penalty during a game he was working, has garnered a bit of a reputation online as someone who tries to get under the skin of Leaf fans.
Leaf Fans Upset That Former Referee's Opinions Appear to Be the Reason They Are Unfairly Called
Leaf fans often think they are unique in getting bad calls during games, or not getting powerplays. Some of the stats might back that up, however, what is more damning is that former referees feel they can openly display their distaste for the Leafs and their fans.
The Leafs were able to overcome the lack of a call that night, beating the Rangers in a shootout.
