Former Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan has landed a new hockey role.

Brendan Shanahan, the former Hockey Hall of Famer and Leafs President of Hockey Operations, has found a new role following his exit from Toronto.
Shanahan did not have his contract renewed to continue in his role with the Leafs following their exit in the 2025 playoffs in the second round to the Florida Panthers.
Having joined the NHL's hockey operations team following being a candidate for the role of Islanders President of Hockey Operations, Shanahan adds another role outside of the league to his resume.

Shanahan gains new role in Hockey Ontario, building junior hockey

Brendan Shanahan was named as a consultant for Hockey Ontario, reviewing the league's practices in order to strengthen junior hockey within the province.
According to a press release from Hockey Canada, Shanahan will provide a review in the coming months that will improve the personal development of the provincial hockey standards, and help provide recommendations on potential improvements.
In a statement, Shanahan called the hiring an honour, saying he is ready to provide the work necessary to enhance the performance of Ontario youth hockey.
Playing hockey for Team Canada was one of the greatest honours of my career, so to work on this project with Hockey Canada and its three Ontario Members to help give back to the game in my home province is an opportunity that I am very grateful for,» said Shanahan. «Throughout this review, I'm looking forward to learning from those involved in junior hockey in Ontario and better understanding their visions for how we can build a stronger system for everyone participating in our great game. - Brendan Shanahan

The move does not appear to clash with Shanahan's current duties with the NHL in hockey operations, and doesn't have a conflict that hinders either role from being balanced.
Hockey Canada says the goal is to ensure player development is improved with a personal player approach that focuses on needs that help build talent, while building a framework for organizational standards wanted from players.
