The hockey world is quite upset after longtime broadcaster Don Cherry was not nominated for the Order of Canada; one of the most esteemed honors one can receive.

Every year, Canadians decide to nominate several celebrities and contributors to the Order of Canada -- an award for people within Canadian society who have made an impact when it comes to their chosen profession, and is filled with prominent celebrities, politicians, and media figures.
The hockey world is no stranger to the award, as several former players have received the award including Wayne Gretzky and Maurice Richard, however fans are outraged there isn't another hockey name given the recognition they believe he deserves.

Don Cherry not on shortlist for Order of Canada; fans react

Don Cherry, longtime broadcaster and former NHL player and head coach is someone who the majority of hockey fans know one way or another. For those who grew up in the 80's to mid-2000s, Cherry was a staple on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast with his Coach's Corner segment.
While others may know him from his polarizing firing from Hockey Night in Canada for some comments that were perceived negatively, there's no doubt he's left a legacy that has stretched for decades.
But with the newest recipients of the Order of Canada, Cherry was left off the list yet again and fans were not having it. Social media was in uproar regarding the fact that Cherry; a well-known and important figure in Canadian culture, was snubbed:
While a lot of the vitriol has been directed towards the politics of the matter, looking strictly at Cherry's resume as a contributor to Canadian culture -- he deserves his flowers.

Don Cherry was more than flashy suits and a booming voice

Not only was he a staple in homes for years, but he generously donated to several causes including animal safety and veterans affected by war.
Cherry was a staunch patriot which may rub some the wrong way but he would take the time to recognize and honor not only troops, but other civilians and put a spotlight on the smaller heroes of the community.
Plus his commercial appeal is unmatched. He was a spokesman for Molson, Pizza Pizza, had his own VHS series that showed highlights of big hits, fights, and crazy moments called 'Rock 'em, Sock 'em'. If you are a Canadian hockey fan, you know Cherry.
Though he has taken a step back now, ending his podcast and focusing on enjoying life now at 91 years old, it doesn't change the fact that regardless of your personal opinion on him; Don Cherry is a Canadian icon and hockey would have looked and sounded so much different without him.
