Reporter Reveals Shocking Reason Behind Calgary's Trade Hesitation With Leafs
This afternoon a new report from Flames writer Eric Francis has revealed the biggest reason that the Flames and Maple Leafs trade talks could fall through. According to the reporter, a perceived strength of having their former GM Brad Treliving in Toronto could now be a weakness.
If you're the Calgary Flames ownership group and you have a chance to trade this guy [Chris Tanev] to any team in the league and your General Manager comes in a says 'you know that guy that walked out the door last year and kind of left us high and dry to a degree, maybe we don't deal with him.' I think that might be a small part of it.
This comes from a reporter who knows the Flames organization quite well. The presence of Treliving in the negotiations isn't just a potential problem for Calgary's ownership but could scare off new GM Craig Conroy from making a deal as well.
New Flames GM Reportedly Scared To Make A Deal With His Old Boss
Francis continues talking about reasons why the situation could fall apart. He mentions that new GM Craig Conroy's mentor was Brad Treliving. Francis seems to believe that Conroy is afraid that Treliving's mentorship could leave Conroy open to exploitation by his mentor.
I think [Craig] Conroy is scared to deal with the guy that kind of mentored him... I think there's a real fear to deal with the Leafs. If you make a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs and you end up losing that trade or if the Leafs go on to win the Stanley Cup, that trade is remembered forever and ever and you're forever tied to that misstep. I think there is a bit of a hesitance to deal with the Leafs.
While dealing with a former member of your organization is a difficult thing to do it happens all the time. A trade that leads to another team winning the Stanley Cup will be looked at poorly no matter the partner.
As the trade deadline approaches it will be interesting to see if there are more reports of the past relationship of Conroy and Treliving getting in the way of a deal being made.
