William Nylander Opens Up On His Contract Negotiations With The Leafs

William Nylander has revealed his view on where his contract stands with the Leafs, and if a deal could come soon.

On '32 Thoughts : The Podcast', Nylander tells Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek that he isn't in a rush to get a new contract done, even with yesterday's four-year extension for fellow upcoming UFA Auston Matthews, but Nylander affirms that it doesn't mean his heart isn't in Toronto.

Nylander, 27, is in the final year of a six-year deal signed in 2018 that pays the Forward $6.9M AAV, a number sure to increase, even more so with Matthews now locked in for $13.25M until 2028.

On '32 Thoughts', Friedman hinted that the league's top players may take the Matthews route, favoring dollar over term, especially with the projected increasing salary cap. The Leafs also have Captain John Tavares and leading scorer Mitch Marner to sign for next season.

Nylander's Interview

Nylander spoke on the potential of taking a discount, again mentioning that whatever happens is between Leafs GM Brad Treliving, and Nylander's agent, Lewis Gross. Nylander said that he's not planning to rush into an extension.

"The contract stuff, that's just for Brad and my agent to dig into. I think both sides know where each other are at, right now we'll just see what happens. I still have one more year left so I don't see what's the rush to get a deal done."



Nylander set career-highs in 2022-23, scoring 40G, 47A & 87P in 82 Games for the Leafs last season, and will take some waiting time focusing on his game, and letting his results dictate where his worth is at.
