Auston Matthews' contract details have been revealed and fans are shocked as to how it is structured.

Matthews Signs Extension

Yesterday, Auston Matthews broke records after signing a massive 4-year extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The contract carries an AAV of $13.25 million giving him the highest AAV in NHL history.

The structure of Matthews' contract is quite intriguing considering how it is almost entirely signing bonuses.
Auston Matthews 4 year $13.25M Cap Hit Deal:

Year 1 775K Salary, $15.925M Signing Bonus
Year 2 775K Salary, $14.425M SB
Year 3 900K Salary, $10.18M SB
Year 4 900K Salary, $9.12M SB

Includes full No Move Clause

The contract is also front-loaded which many players want their contract to have.
The contract being mainly signing bonuses means Matthews will get the money primarily upfront at the start of each year and will get a small salary at throughout the year.
The contract being basically all signing bonuses means that Matthews will be basically buyout proof but it is unlikely that the Leafs will ever have to consider buying Matthews out.
