The Leafs' primary criteria for their next GM is someone with NHL GM experience. A candidate who potentially fits the bill and is keeping an eye on Toronto has emerged.

Highly Experienced Candidate Surfaces in Leafs' GM Search

Doug Wilson, who served as the GM of the San Jose Sharks for nearly two decades, stands out with an impressive track record. During his tenure, Wilson made numerous trades and shrewd draft picks.

From 2003 to 2022, Wilson drafted notable players like Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, and Timo Meier. Additionally, he acquired key players such as Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson, and Evander Kane.

It is evident that Wilson possesses significant expertise as a GM.

However, in 2022, he temporarily stepped away from the game due to health reasons. Despite this, there are indications that he might make a comeback in Toronto, where he could potentially contribute to the Leafs' pursuit of the elusive Stanley Cup.

Bringing Wilson on board would provide the Leafs with unparalleled experience compared to other available GM candidates. Moreover, his presence could bring stability to the organization, given the years of consistency he brought to the San Jose Sharks.

It's worth noting that the Sharks have strong ties to the Leafs, as former Sharks legends Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau have both played in Toronto in recent seasons, in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

Although Wilson couldn't secure a championship in San Jose, he could potentially be the missing piece for the Leafs, propelling them to their first cup victory since 1967.
