The Toronto Maple Leafs have shown they aren't afraid of making a big time splash, and now, they find themselves looking at another blockbuster acquisition ahead of the March 8 deadline.
The Calgary Flames haven't played perfect hockey in 2023-24, but one player that has been fantastic for them is goaltender Jacob Markstrom, posting an impressive 2.62 GAA and a .910 save percentage on the season.
The Leafs have long been in the market for goaltending help, and now, it appears several media outlets and reporters have connected the dots.
While Toronto would still have to fix their blue line issues (something that could be done in a trade with Calgary as both Tanev and Hanifin are on the way out), getting a former Vezina Trophy finalist would be a huge boost to their chances.
With Ilya Samsonov struggling and Joseph Woll dealing with injury issues, things couldn't be worse for Toronto's goaltending depth, but getting Markstrom, who has posted a .929 save percentage over his past five games would be a good deal for both parties.
The Maple Leafs would likely have to part ways with Fraser Minten, Matthew Knies, Easton Cowan, Nick Robertson or potentially another prospect along with some picks, any deal involving Markstrom, Tanev or Hanifin is exactly what this team needs going forward.
