Ilya Samsonov is going into his second season as the starter for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ahead of the start of the season, Samsonov has unveiled a new goalie mask. Many are comparing it to a former Maple Leafs great goaltender who wore a similar design.
Samsonov's New Mask Takes Inspiration From Former Leafs Goalie
Today during a media shoot in preparation for the upcoming season Ilya Samsonov debuted a new goalie mask.

The style and design of Samsonov's mask are very reminiscent of another former Toronto Maple Leaf.

Curtis Joseph had one of the most iconic goalie masks in NHL history.

The design was meant to resemble a doglike creature from the film that Curtis Joseph shares a nickname with Cujo. Now it seems as though Ilya Samsonov is continuing the design into the modern era.
Samsonov with his new gear will look to improve upon his 2022-23 season. In 42 games Samsonov posted a 2.33 goals against average and a 0.919 save percentage. In the playoffs, however, Samsonov struggled. Now with a new mask maybe Samsonov can channel the power of Cujo and help the Toronto Maple Leafs go on a run in 2023-24.
