Insider Reveals a Possible Erik Karlsson Trade
Erik Karlsson has been on the trade market for months now. The list has grown and dwindled back down of potential suitors.
Two teams have stayed in the race consistently in the Carolina Hurricanes and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The biggest hold-up in both teams' cases has been Karlsson's massive 11.5 million dollar cap hit.
Pittsburgh's Potential Solution
Recently a report from Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now suggested a potential solution to the Penguins' cap space conundrum. Adding a third team into the mix would most likely do the trick and one team Peng suggests is the Chicago Blackhawks. The potential trade is laid out below by Peng detailing what each team would get.
The Penguins would acquire Erik Karlsson with the Sharks retaining $4.5 million. The Sharks would receive Ty Smith, Sam Poulin, and the Penguins' 2025 second-round pick (or their first if the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2024 or 2025). The Blackhawks would receive Jeff Petry and the Penguins' 2024 first-round pick (top-5 protected). Pittsburgh's New Look Roster After the Rumored Trade
If this trade were to go through the Penguins would add the reigning Norris Trophy winner to their core. Losing out on two of their better prospects Ty Smith and Sam Poulin would be a difficult choice to make. However, as long as the Penguins still have Crosby and Malkin they are in win-now mode, and while the fallout once they are gone may be a dark time for the franchise another Stanley Cup would soften the blow.
