Oilers' Mattias Ekholm calls out NHL referees in press conference

The Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm called out the NHL referees in a press conference.

Once again, in this year's playoffs, officiating became a controversial talking point. While a few games went without any trouble, there's often one or two bad calls that steals the spotlight from the rest of the game.

In the last game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars, the refs made a controversial penalty call that shows their inconstancy.

Darnell Nurse hit Tyler Seguin in front of the Oilers net and was penalized for it, while Ekholm received the same kind of hit a few minutes later and wasn't.

In his post-game comments, Ekholm shared his thoughts on the matter:

"I looked at that Darnell [Nurse] penalty today and 5 minutes later I get cross-checked right in the same spot."

This led Ekholm to mention how his team struggles to get power plays against the Stars, despite their efforts to draw penalties:

"It's hard, it's physical, it's playoff hockey out there, it just seems to be we need to kill more than we get power plays. Whether that's just the way it has happened or not I don't know."

With the Oilers having one of the best powerplays in the NHL, any chance they get to play with one more player on the ice than the other team is a chance to take the game away.
