The Florida Panthers have made a shocking move ahead of Game Five of the Stanley Cup Final. The team announced this morning that they have agreed to terms on a contract with Swiss goaltender Ludovic Waeber on a one-year contract.
Panthers Find Support in Waeber
This move came as quite a surprise to fans today, as we very rarely see teams singing players so late in the season. The catch with this deal is that the contract doesn't start until the 2023-24 season, meaning Waeber is ineligible to play in the ongoing Stanley Cup Final.
Waeber had quite an impressive season in the Swiss NL with the ZSC Lions, posting a .914 save percentage and 2.50 goals against average throughout 19 games.
Waeber would be the 4th goalie that Florida has under contract for the 2023-24 season, as Alex Lyon is on an expiring deal. This would seem to indicate that Lyon is on his way out of Florida unless the team plans on playing a goalie under contract in the ECHL, which we rarely see.
