Let's be honest. The identity of the Toronto Maple Leafs is basically based on the Core Four. For years now, they've been the face of the franchise.

Now, it's become a bit of a distraction and divided the locker room. It's been reported that one of the Leafs' priorities in this off-season is to de-emphasize the Core Four and create a true team spirit.

Treliving Aims to Improve Bottom Six

For the next season, one of Brad Treliving's goals will be to make the team harder to play against and more physical.
He'll aim to grab quality bottom-six players that can bring that energy to solder the team together.
Kyle Dubas did that at the deadline, getting Noel Acciari and Ryan O'Reilly from the Blues. It's unanimous, people want to see them back next season.
But Brad Treliving knows another player that could fill these criterias.

Hathaway with the Leafs?

Garnet Hathaway was traded this year from the Capitals to the Bruins. He played an important part of Boston's succesful end of the season.
On July 1st, he'll enter the free agents market in the hope to sign another contract in the NHL.
There's a concrete link between him and Treliving that could make his signature in Toronto possible.
"Garnet Hathaway's first-ever professional hockey game was as a member of the Calgary Flames organization and his first-ever NHL contract was signed by Brad Treliving.

Hathaway's exactly the type of perfect fourth-liner this team needs."

He'd be a great fit in Toronto. Especially considering the Leafs' need for quality bottom-six players.
Last season, he played a total of 84 games for both Washington and Boston.
He scored 13 goals and earned 22 points while mostly playing on the 4th line. He also had +5 plus/minus, 69 penalty minutes, 268 hits and blocked 83 shots.
