With John Klingberg potentially out for the remainder of the season, this NHL insider has revealed the Leafs' plan to replace him and shore up their blueline.

Leafs Look to Replace Klingberg on the Blueline with Tanev According to Elliotte Friedman

Earlier today on his 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman revealed that John Klingberg is likely going to be out for the remainder of the season. Now, he has revealed that the Leafs already have a plan to replace him. That plan is Chris Tanev of the Calgary Flames.

Elliotte Friedman on 32TP says that that Leafs will have clarity on Klingberg this week. Reiterated that they want a RHD with edge. Also mentioned that he heard Sean Walker is not high on their list. There is a feeling around the league that the Leafs can sign Tanev. A Few things teams told Friedman that they are looking to add their defense core. Leafs are ok trading mid-late round pick to get a rental. #LeafsForever

The Leafs are okay with trading away some picks in order to get a d-guy for this season, according to Friedman. This makes sense, as they need to make a push this season, especially with William Nylander's contract running dry. This is the most optimal season for the Leafs to make a push, and trading a mid-late pick to ensure their blueline has the legs to do so is well worth it, in my opinion.

Leafs' GM Brad Treliving Has the Edge When it Comes to Tanev Trade

There's no question that many teams around the league are looking at Chris Tanev, however, the Leafs are in a unique position that gives them the edge. Tanev will be a free agent after this season, and many teams don't want to give up too much without certainty that he won't just be a rental for this year.

The #Leafs want to improve their decimated blue line and are reportedly trying to pursue Chris Tanev from the Flames. According to Kevin Weekes, Toronto tried to land Tanev and Zadorov.

Some clarity on Klingberg first would help↩️

Obviously Leafs could've matched the Zadorov price so gotta think Tre knew a lot about his former player & is keeping the powder dry for Tanev or a non-rental.

Looks bad given the state of Toronto's blue line & the lower than expected return, but gonna wait a min before judging

However, Brad Treliving is the person who signed Tanev to this contract and has a great relationship with him. As Friedman reports, there is a feeling that the Leafs will be able to sign Tanev after this year anyway, giving them a leg up on the trade negotiations.

Time will tell exactly what price the Leafs will pay for Tanev, or if they lose out to another team bidding for his services.
