Former professional hockey defenseman Paul Giallonardo has passed away at the age of 39 after a long battle with cancer.

The OHL announced that alumnus Paul Giollonardo has passed away at the age of 39.

"The Ontario Hockey League is mourning the loss of an alumnus gone far too soon. Former Windsor Spitfires defenceman Paul Giallonardo passed on Sunday night following a battle with cancer. He was just 39 years old."







Giollonardo played in four seasons with the Windsor Spitfires registering well over a penalty minute per game and scoring 91 total points across 247 games.

After his time in the OHL, he went on to play in the CIS for St. Thomas University spending three seasons with them.

He then played one final year overseas playing professionally in the top Italian league and scored 15 points in 46 games before hanging up the skates.

Are thoughts are with Giollonardo's loved ones at this moment. May he rest in peace.
