A new report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has linked the Toronto Maple Leafs to an All-Star from this season. Pagnotta believes that the Maple Leafs have an interest in Anaheim Ducks forward Frank Vatrano.
While Vatrano might not be the most exciting All-Star to add this season he could add a good scoring touch to the middle six of the Maple Leafs. He also could be cheaper than several other options on the market.
Frank Vatrano is having by far the best season of his career. In 59 games he has 46 points including 27 goals. Vatrano would add another shoot first goal-scoring threat to a lineup that lacks pure goal-scoring beyond Auston Matthews and William Nylander.
A trade for Vatrano would likely require the Maple Leafs to give up a top prospect and a valuable pick. Let's look at a potential trade that could make sense.
With the Maple Leafs' lack of second-round picks, they would likely need to give up a first-round pick in this deal. In combination with prospect Roni Hirvonen the deal likely gets done. The 2024 draft is considered to be not as strong as recent years so giving up the pick for a player on pace to score 30 goals would be well worth the price if he continues his strong play.
As the trade deadline approaches the Maple Leafs will need to evaluate how much they value their first-round pick this season. If they feel they are close to winning the Stanley Cup all options should be on the table.
