Rumour: Montreal Canadiens Pushing to Trade Carey Price
The Montreal Canadiens have been busy this offseason, reshaping their team and shedding unnecessary contracts that don't fit their future. It turns out that Carey Price might be next.
Price on the Trade Block?
Carey Price has unfortunately been suffering from a lagging leg injury, one that kept him from playing last season. With no long-term plan to return, and his career coming to a close, GM Kent Hughes isn't closing the door to trading the long-time Habs goaltender.
«I think there's always a possibility to do things,» Hughes said. «I don't know what that looks like, and I don't know ultimately if that ever happens, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as an impossibility.» - Kent Hughes
Hughes' statement is certainly fueling the rumours that Price could be moved.
Tough Goaltender Situation in Montreal
Price's contract is a difficult one to move, carrying a $10.5 million AAV that is made up mostly of bonuses and insurance. However, the Habs are already in a predicament with overstaffing at the goalie position, splitting time evenly between two starters last year and then adding Casey DeSmith this offseason in the Karlsson deal.
The Canadiens will need to be wary that they don't harm their rebuild by eagerly moving Price. It may be in their interest to eat his remaining contract in order to keep their prospects and future draft picks.
