Sunday in the NHL began with a blockbuster move, as the Pittsburgh Penguins finally acquired Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks, and sneaking into the deal were the Montreal Canadiens.
A veteran returns
The team were able to offload Mike Hoffman to get future assets back, and in that deal, they also brought back eight-year Canadien Jeff Petry, a reunion which has Montreal fans excited.
However, that reunion may be short lived, as the team are now predicted to flip him for more assets in the coming weeks, and given his proven experience at the NHL level, there will be plenty of takers.
On the move again
According to a Sportsnet insider, General Manager Kent Hughes has already begun working the phones, and it's likely that he will be moved before the regular season or at the trade deadline.
The Canadiens appear to still be a few years away from genuinely competing in a crowded Eastern Conference, so if they continue to move assets like this for future pieces, they may be in very good shape for years to come.
