The Toronto Maple Leafs were reportedly in on Nikita Zadorov before he found himself heading to Vancouver. Now NHL insider Kevin Weekes has given some insight into the process.

Maple Leafs Took A Swing At Flames Defensemen

A new report from NHL insider Kevin Weekes after the completed Nikita Zadorov trade indicates the Maple Leafs were working on a bigger deal. According to Weekes, the Maple Leafs were trying to put together a package to acquire both Zadorov and Chris Tanev.

Further to my last tweet ; I'm told the @MapleLeafs were trying to acquire both D Zadorov and Tanev from @NHLFlames. With the @Canucks Zadorov deal now complete, the #LeafsForever will continue shopping for Blueline help. #HockeyTwitter #HockeyX

With the Canucks only trading for Zadorov this means that Chris Tanev is still potentially available.

What Will Tanev Cost For The Maple Leafs?

If we use the Zadorov trade as a benchmark for a Tanev deal we can begin to estimate the return that would be required.

If the Maple Leafs are going to trade for Tanev they would still need the Flames to retain some salary to make things work. If they are going to ask the Flames to retain they will also need to pay more for Tanev.

With Zadorov being traded for a pair of mid-round picks the asking price for Tanev would likely include a prospect and a second instead of a third from the Zadorov trade. While this is a premium compared to Zadorov who is young it could still be worth the price if the Maple Leafs can find a good role for him.
