So, when he traded several picks and some other pieces for Ryan O'Reilly, a pending UFA, immediate thought went to an extension.
While Kyle Dubas has crushed the rumours of an immediate extension, logic indicates a path forward.
Ryan O'Reilly is currently making $7.5-million, and is due for a pay cut on his next deal.
He has made an incredible $76.4-million already in his career, so he would likely be willing to take a pay cut to stay in Toronto.
With Alex Kerfoot and Wayne Simmonds leaving the team as UFA's, and the salary cap increasing by $1-million, the Leafs will have just over $5.4-million in wiggle-room.
This, a five-year deal at an annual average value of $5-million makes a lot of sense.
Not only would it give him a smooth $100-million earned in his outstanding career, but it would expire when he's 37.
This would give him the option to subsequently sign one-year deals until he is ready to retire.
If there is mutual interest in an extension, which we all know there is, this is definitely a possible route for the Leafs.
We will have to wait and see what happens.
