If the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to do a potential sign and trade with the Vegas Knights for Tomas Hertl, they may be out of luck according to David Pagnotta.

With all the talk about Mitch Marner and his potential destination this summer, there were reports that the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes were trying to work out a deal sending Tomas Hertl to Carolina as a cap dump in order to sign Marner.
There's also the potential that Toronto could end up convincing Marner to do a sign and trade with Vegas to bring Hertl aboard, and give the team at least some type of replacement when it comes to their offense; especially if John Tavares also leaves town.

Tomas Hertl not going anywhere just yet: David Pagnotta

But a new report from The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta shows that while it would be great for Vegas to get rid of Hertl, it might be a bit harder than anticipated given his immense amount of protection:
On all the Tomas Hertl chatter today a note: He still has a full NMC, which turns into a 3-team trade list July 1.
A three-team list is very slim pickings, and there are no guarantees that Toronto or Carolina are on there even if Vegas wanted to dump Hertl off.

Toronto is hoping they are one of the lucky three teams

There's no denying that Hertl would make either team better, and he's with a reasonable contract at $6.75-million for the next five years and with a rising salary cap; that may be a bargain if he keeps up his production.
Hertl, 31, has been one of the more consistent and underrated goal scorers over the past few seasons, and came into Vegas with a vengeance, putting up 61 points (32G, 29A).
In his 12-year career, the long-time San Jose Sharks forward has 549 points in 791 games (252G, 297A) and has been a very solid two-way presence for most of his playing time.
While not adding the level of playmaking as Marner did, the Leafs certainly could have used a perennial 20-goal scorer to help out Auston Matthews, who could be a dual threat now with his playmaking ability taking a huge step forward this year.
But as of now, it seems Hertl is going to stay put unless it's a team he truly feels he can succeed in.
Whether that's Carolina, Toronto, Vegas or somewhere else; only time will tell.
