Per NHL Insider Darren Dreger, there are currently four teams in the mix to sign Jonathan Toews this summer, and the Maple Leafs are certainly still one of them.

Since announcing his comeback earlier this season, former Chicago Blackhawks captain and three-time Stanley Cup winner Jonathan Toews has been preparing to decide where he wants to end up making his triumphant return.
Hoping to make a decision by the NHL Draft, Toews is going to have his fair share of suitors, all opting to add a modern day legend to their roster.

Toronto, Winnipeg, Colorado, Tampa Bay all in the mix for Jonathan Toews

There's been a lot of talk about where Toews will end up, and according to NHL Insider Darren Dreger, he think it's going to boil down to four teams: Toronto, Colorado, Winnipeg and Tampa Bay:

All four teams make sense for Toews, and he could feasibly help out each team in a more reserved role.
No one is going to ask him to play the level he was at previously, especially with a two-year hiatus, but if he can offer at least a glimpse of what he used to be, it's going to be a great addition (and a great story).
Toews is coming off a health pilgrimage to India where he sought alternative treatments for both his Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and Long-COVID symptoms.
Responding well to the treatments, Toews announced earlier this season he intends on making a comeback and was looking to get into good enough physical shape.

How could Jonathan Toews make the Maple Leafs better?

Well besides adding someone who was won a ton of Cups, has been one of the best playoff performers of the early to mid 2010's, and a fantastic leader in both the locker room and community; he adds secondary scoring.
It's one of the team's sore spots and finding both a 3C who can generate offense, play defense and aggressively and on the cheap isn't easy to come by.
Toews isn't going to get a massive contract, and the weight of his cost vs. his potential is well worth the price.
If the team is set on adding John Tavares back into the fold, they could use Toews as a 3C option who could run the second power play unit and give him a more sheltered role where he can get back at his own pace.
Toews, 37, is one of the NHL's greatest players over the last 15 years. Part of a dynasty in Chicago alongside Patrick Kane, the duo led the team to three cups in five years.
He has 883 points in 1,067 games (372G, 511A) to go along with 119 points in 137 games (45G, 74A) along with three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe, a Selke, and Mark Messier award; he was also named to the All-Rookie team and is part of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players.
Also a two-time gold medalist for Team Canada in the Olympics, he's one of the best defensive players in the modern era, and his clutch factor in the postseason is legendary with 11 game-winning goals.
Toews would no doubt be a fantastic and cheap option for the Maple Leafs this summer, and their medical staff is top notch; so if anyone can help him it's them.
Who knows? This could bring alongside a face familiar to Toews to play alongside him once again.
